Broyhill Bookshelf | Classic Storage & Display Furniture
Our Attic Heirlooms Library Bookcase brings vintage-inspired craftsmanship into modern homes. This five-shelf design features solid wood construction with hand-applied distressing that gives each piece its own character. We built this bookshelf to anchor a home office or living room while providing ample space for books, collectibles, and family photos.

Every Broyhill bookshelf starts with carefully selected hardwoods and engineered materials chosen for their structural integrity and lasting beauty. We use solid oak, pine, and maple in our traditional collections, while contemporary designs incorporate high-grade veneers over stable plywood cores. This combination delivers the warm appearance of natural wood with enhanced resistance to warping and splitting.

Sizing & Room Placement Options
Choosing the Right Height
Bookshelf height dramatically impacts a room’s visual proportions. Our tower models reach 72 to 76 inches, ideal for standard ceiling heights and creating vertical interest in living rooms or home offices. Mid-height options between 48 and 60 inches work well under windows or in spaces where you want to maintain sightlines across the room.
Width Considerations
Narrow profiles measuring 24 to 32 inches wide fit comfortably in hallways, beside doorways, or flanking fireplaces. Wider library bookcases spanning 38 to 48 inches anchor larger walls and provide substantial storage for extensive collections. We recommend leaving at least 36 inches of clearance in front of any bookshelf for comfortable browsing and retrieval.

Shelf Capacity & Organization
Standard shelf spacing in our bookshelves ranges from 11 to 13 inches, accommodating most hardcover books and decorative items. Adjustable shelving systems include metal support pins that lock into pre-drilled holes at one-inch intervals, letting you customize spacing for oversized art books or smaller paperback collections. Fixed shelves in contemporary designs create consistent visual rhythm while maintaining structural stability.
Weight capacity varies by model and construction method. Solid wood shelves typically support 50 pounds per shelf, while engineered wood designs handle 30 to 40 pounds depending on span width. We include weight specifications with every product to help you plan your arrangement safely. For heavy reference libraries or extensive media collections, look for models with cross-support bars or double-thickness shelving.

Common Questions About Our Bookshelves
Shelf capacity varies by model and construction method. Our solid wood bookshelves typically support 50 pounds per shelf, while engineered wood designs handle 30 to 40 pounds depending on shelf width and span. Specific weight limits are listed in the product specifications for each model.
We test all shelving under load conditions that exceed published capacities to ensure safety margins. For the heaviest collections, look for models with center support posts or metal reinforcement bars that distribute weight more evenly across the shelf span.
Most of our traditional and transitional bookshelf designs feature adjustable shelving with metal support pins that fit into pre-drilled holes spaced at one-inch intervals. This allows you to customize shelf heights to accommodate different book sizes and decorative items.
Contemporary models in our Perspectives and Ember Grove collections typically use fixed shelving to maintain clean lines and structural integrity. Fixed shelves are permanently installed during manufacturing and cannot be repositioned, but they offer enhanced stability for heavier items.
Assembly difficulty ranges from simple to moderate depending on the model. Most bookshelves arrive with the main frame pre-assembled, requiring you to attach shelves, backing panels, and decorative elements. Average assembly time is 45 to 90 minutes for one person using basic tools.
We include numbered hardware packs, detailed instructions with photographs, and all necessary fasteners. The cam-lock connector system used in many models eliminates the need for power tools. If you prefer professional assembly, we offer white-glove delivery service in select markets through our customer care team.
Solid wood furniture naturally expands and contracts with humidity changes, which is normal and expected. Our finishes include moisture-resistant topcoats that help minimize this movement, but we recommend maintaining indoor humidity between 35 and 55 percent for optimal performance.
Avoid placing bookshelves directly against exterior walls in poorly insulated rooms, near heating vents, or in damp basements without climate control. Engineered wood models offer greater dimensional stability in high-humidity environments compared to solid wood construction, making them suitable for finished basements and sunrooms.
Finish availability varies by collection and model. Our Attic Heirlooms line offers Natural Oak and Rustic Cherry with hand-applied distressing. Contemporary Perspectives pieces come in Graphite, White, and Espresso laminate finishes. The Ember Grove collection features Weathered Pine with exposed wood grain and natural variations.
Each finish goes through multiple preparation stages including sanding, staining, and protective topcoat application. We use low-VOC finishes that meet California Air Resources Board standards for indoor air quality. Custom finish requests are not available, but our standard palette coordinates with most furniture collections.
Every bookshelf measuring 48 inches or taller includes anti-tip safety straps and wall-mounting hardware. We strongly recommend securing these straps to wall studs according to the included installation guide, especially in homes with children or pets.
The anti-tip kit includes heavy-duty metal brackets, wood screws for stud attachment, and detailed placement instructions. If you’re unable to locate wall studs in your desired placement area, consider using toggle bolts rated for the bookshelf’s total loaded weight. Our customer service team can provide additional safety guidance for specific room configurations.
Dust weekly with a soft microfiber cloth following the direction of the wood grain. For deeper cleaning, lightly dampen a cloth with water and immediately dry the surface to prevent moisture penetration. Avoid commercial furniture polishes containing silicone or wax buildup.
Address spills immediately by blotting with an absorbent cloth—never allow liquids to sit on wood surfaces. For minor scratches on stained finishes, use a matching touch-up marker available through our parts department. Deep scratches or finish damage may require professional furniture repair. Keep bookshelves away from direct sunlight to prevent uneven fading over time.
