Broyhill Saga Desk – Mid-Century Modern Office Furniture
The Broyhill Saga Desk is a cornerstone of mid-century American furniture design. Introduced in the 1960s, this writing desk pairs clean lines with practical storage, featuring a walnut veneer top, three drawers with solid brass pulls, and tapered solid wood legs that define the era’s aesthetic.

The Saga line debuted during Broyhill’s most celebrated period, when American furniture makers embraced Scandinavian minimalism and organic materials. Our designers drew inspiration from Danish modernism, translating those principles into pieces accessible to mid-century households.

Drawer Construction & Storage Layout
We built the Saga desk with three drawers: two side-mounted drawers for documents and supplies, plus one center drawer with a felt-lined pencil tray. Each drawer features English dovetail joinery at the corners, a hallmark of quality furniture construction that resists racking over decades of use.
The solid brass pulls are substantial and cool to the touch, requiring no more than a quarter-turn to engage the catch. Drawer glides are wood-on-wood, waxed at the factory for smooth operation. This traditional approach means occasional re-waxing maintains performance without replacing metal hardware.

Dimensions & Room Placement
At 48 inches wide, the Saga desk fits comfortably against a bedroom wall, in a hallway nook, or as a freestanding piece in a dedicated office. The 22-inch depth leaves room to walk behind a chair without the desk protruding into traffic paths.
Standard desk height of 30 inches pairs with office chairs between 16 and 20 inches in seat height. The tapered legs provide 26 inches of knee clearance, accommodating most adults comfortably. We recommend placing the desk perpendicular to a window to minimize screen glare while maximizing natural light on the work surface.

Common Questions About the Saga Desk
The desk measures 48 inches wide, 22 inches deep, and 30 inches tall. Knee clearance is 26 inches from the floor to the underside of the center drawer. The tapered legs add visual lightness while maintaining stability.
The top and drawer fronts are walnut veneer over a solid wood core. The legs are solid wood stained to match. This construction method was standard for mid-century furniture, balancing beauty with affordability and stability. Solid walnut would make the piece prohibitively expensive and more prone to warping.
Yes, the 48-inch width accommodates a monitor up to 27 inches, plus a keyboard and mouse. The 22-inch depth is sufficient for a monitor stand or laptop. Many customers use the desk for hybrid work setups, pairing it with a wireless keyboard to maximize surface area.
Our reproduction desks use brass pulls that match the original specifications in size, finish, and mounting style. Vintage Saga desks from the 1960s and 1970s feature identical hardware. The brass develops a natural patina over time, which enhances the authentic mid-century look.
Dust weekly with a soft, dry cloth, wiping along the grain. Every six months, apply a thin coat of furniture oil or paste wax, then buff after ten minutes. Avoid harsh cleaners, excessive water, and direct sunlight. These simple steps will preserve the finish for decades.
Minimal assembly is required. The legs attach to the desk body with four bolts per leg, and you’ll need a Phillips screwdriver or hex key depending on the hardware supplied. Most customers complete assembly in under thirty minutes. The drawers arrive pre-installed in the desk body.
The Saga collection includes matching nightstands, dressers, credenzas, and bookcases. While originally a bedroom line, many customers use Saga pieces in home offices for a cohesive mid-century look. We recommend the credenza for additional office storage and the bookcase for displaying reference materials or decorative items.
