Broyhill Dining Chairs | Handcrafted Seating for Every Table

★★★★★4.8· loved by thousands

Our Attic Heirlooms dining side chair brings heritage craftsmanship to modern homes. Hand-distressed oak construction shows authentic wear patterns that tell a story, while the solid wood seat offers durability that outlasts upholstered alternatives. We finish each chair with a multi-step stain process that highlights the natural grain, then add a protective topcoat for everyday use.

Why it works
Frame Construction & Materials

We build our Broyhill dining chairs on solid hardwood frames—oak, walnut, and maple depending on the style—because engineered wood doesn’t hold screws reliably over time. Every joint uses either mortise-and-tenon construction or corner blocks with wood glue and dowels, which distribute weight more evenly than metal brackets. The Attic Heirlooms line adds hand-distressing after assembly: artisans scrape edges, gouge surfaces with chains, and apply worm holes with awls to mimic generations of wear.

Seat Cushions & Upholstery Care

Upholstered models use high-density polyurethane foam rated at 2.0 pounds per cubic foot—firm enough to prevent bottoming out, soft enough for two-hour dinner parties. We wrap the foam in a layer of Dacron batting before upholstering to prevent the fabric from clinging to the foam’s surface texture. Performance fabrics (polyester, acrylic blends) clean with water and mild dish soap; natural fibers (linen, cotton) require dry cleaning for oil-based stains.

Removable seat covers are not standard—our upholstery is stapled to the frame—but you can spot-clean spills immediately with a damp microfiber cloth. Blot from the outside edges toward the center to prevent the stain from spreading. For set-in stains on natural fabrics, we recommend a professional upholstery cleaner rather than DIY solvent treatments, which can discolor the finish on exposed wood trim.

Sizing & Table Compatibility
The details

Sizing & Table Compatibility

Standard dining chair seat height measures 18 inches from floor to top of cushion, which pairs with tables 29 to 30 inches tall—the height of our Attic Heirlooms and Brasilia dining tables. Counter-height chairs (24-inch seats) work with 36-inch pub tables but feel awkward at standard dining heights. We recommend 24 inches of table width per person: a 60-inch round table seats five comfortably with our Emphasis chairs, while a 96-inch rectangular table accommodates eight Lenoir parsons chairs with room for serving platters.

Armchair Considerations

Dining armchairs add 6 to 8 inches to the overall width, so a standard 42-inch-wide table only fits four armchairs maximum. Side chairs without arms let you squeeze an extra seat at the table’s short ends when you host large gatherings. Mix two armchairs at the table heads with side chairs along the long sides for a balanced look that doesn’t sacrifice flexibility.

Solid chairs that match our vintage table
We inherited a 1960s Broyhill table from my husband’s grandmother and couldn’t find original chairs anywhere. The Emphasis chairs are nearly identical to photos we found in old catalogs—same leg angle, same seat shape. They arrived in perfect condition and took me twenty minutes total to assemble all six. The walnut finish is a hair darker than our table but it looks intentional, like we mixed eras on purpose.

Finally, dining chairs I don’t have to baby
I have three kids under ten and our old upholstered chairs were a nightmare—juice stains, marker scribbles, you name it. These Attic Heirlooms chairs are solid wood so spills just wipe off, and honestly the kids’ dings and scratches blend right into the distressed finish. They’re heavy enough that nobody tips them over, which was a constant problem with our lightweight IKEA set.

Beautiful chairs, wish they came in counter height
The Lenoir parsons chairs are exactly what I wanted for our dining room—neutral, comfortable, and well-made. I’m docking one star only because I was hoping to use them at our kitchen island, but at 18-inch seat height they’re too short for our 36-inch countertop. I ended up buying a second set of actual counter stools elsewhere. If Broyhill made a 24-inch version I’d buy eight more tomorrow.

Stackable feature is a game-changer
We live in a small condo and only use our dining table for holidays and dinner parties. The rest of the time I stack four Emphasis chairs in the coat closet and two against the bedroom wall—takes up almost no space. When we have people over I just pull them out and everyone comments on how sleek they look. The fabric has held up great to my dog jumping on them when I’m not looking.

Worth every penny for the quality
I almost bought cheaper chairs from a big-box store but decided to splurge on the Broyhill set after sitting in them at a showroom. Three years later they still feel as solid as day one—no wobbling, no loose joints, no sagging cushions. The linen fabric has faded slightly in the spots that get direct afternoon sun, but it looks natural, not cheap. I’ll be passing these down to my daughter someday.

Hand-distressing is the real deal
I was skeptical that factory-distressed furniture would look authentic, but these chairs genuinely look like they came from an estate sale. The wear patterns aren’t random—there’s extra distressing on the top rail where hands would actually grip, and the seat edges show the kind of rounding you get from decades of people sliding in and out. My antique-dealer friend couldn’t believe they were new.

Good to know

Dining Chair Questions

Yes—many customers pair armchairs at the table heads with side chairs along the long edges, or mix upholstered and wood chairs for visual interest. We recommend keeping the finish color consistent (all walnut or all oak) so the look feels intentional rather than mismatched. Our design team can also send photos of successful mixed-chair arrangements if you need inspiration before ordering.

All our chairs include either felt pads or plastic glides on the feet, both of which work on carpet and hard flooring. Felt pads are gentler on hardwood but may compress slightly on thick carpet—if your dining room has plush pile deeper than half an inch, ask us to substitute plastic glides at checkout. The chair legs won’t sink into carpet because the weight distributes across four feet rather than concentrating on narrow points.

Blot liquid spills immediately with a dry microfiber cloth—don’t rub, which pushes the liquid deeper into the foam. For water-based spills (wine, juice, coffee) on performance fabrics, follow up with a damp cloth and a drop of dish soap, then blot dry. Natural fiber upholstery (linen, cotton) should be spot-cleaned with water only; oil-based stains require professional dry cleaning. We do not recommend steam cleaners or solvent-based upholstery shampoos, which can damage the fabric’s stain-resistant treatment.

Our side chairs are rated for 250 to 300 pounds depending on the model—specific capacities appear in each product’s feature list. Armchairs typically support 275 pounds because the arms distribute some of the load away from the seat frame. These ratings assume normal use with weight centered on the seat; standing on a chair or leaning back on two legs voids the warranty and can damage the frame.

Replacement seat cushions are available for upholstered models—call our customer service team with your original order number and we’ll ship a new cushion in the original fabric. Wood seats on styles like the Attic Heirlooms chair cannot be replaced separately because they’re part of the structural frame. If a wood seat cracks or splits within the warranty period, we’ll replace the entire chair.

We cover structural defects in the wood frame and joinery for five years from the original purchase date. Upholstery fabric and foam cushions have a two-year warranty against manufacturing flaws like split seams or premature sagging. Normal wear and tear—fading, pilling, minor scratches—is not covered. The warranty applies only to the original purchaser and requires proof of purchase from an authorized Broyhill retailer.

A 60-inch round table comfortably seats five to six side chairs; a 72-inch round fits six to eight. For rectangular tables, allow 24 inches of table edge per person: a 96-inch table seats eight side chairs (three per long side, one at each end). If you plan to use armchairs, reduce the count by one or two because armchairs add 6 to 8 inches of width per seat.
